Black and Decker GH3000 String Trimmer Review
The Black and Decker GH3000 string trimmer is lightweight and ergonomically designed. It is about as close to a gas powered trimmer as you can get. If you have a large yard and heavy duty weeds, this is the string trimmer for you.
One of the things that sets this electric string trimmer apart from others is that the motor is at the top of the shaft. This makes it much easier to balance. Most electric models have the motor down close to the ground. The motor of the GH3000 is near the handle allowing for a better distribution of the weight.
The 7.5 AMP motor with gear drive transmission and the 14 inch cutting swath will help you tackle both tough weeds and grasses with ease. Weighing in at only 6.9 pounds this trimmer is much lighter in comparison to a gas powered model and at the same time it is close in power to a gas model.

Motor
The Black and Decker GH3000 string trimmer has a powerful 7.5 AMP and 120 volt motor. The high amps on this string trimmer make it similar to the power of a gas unit. In my research about the largest AMP electric string trimmer I have seen is 8 – 10. So this is definitely on the heavier duty side of string trimmers. Many of the people who reviewed this product raved about how powerful it was and how it blew through heavy grasses and weeds easily.
The GH3000 is about as close to a gas trimmer as you can get with it’s power and balance. Most electric trimmers have their motor at the bottom of the shaft. However, this trimmer has it’s motor near the handle grip just like a gas trimmer does.

Feed system/line
The Automatic Feed Spool – AFS will automatically feed the line as needed. There is no bumping required. While you are trimming, the tips of the line will become frayed and worn and the special self feeding spool will automatically feed and trim a fresh length of line.
If you have looked at reviews of string trimmers you will notice that there are always complaints about the auto feed. In fact, you will see complaints about bump feed models too. The complaints range from either the trimmer feeds too fast or that the trimmer doesn’t feed at all. This particular trimmer seems to have about equal number of complaints of each, as well as many people who are thrilled with the way the line dispenses.
Things to keep in mind if you are having problems with the way the line advances are:
- make sure there is not any debris in the lever area
- make sure you use the proper size line (.080 for the GH300 round
- Using serrated or heavier gauge line can overload the motor and cause overheating.
- make sure the spool is properly seating the nub in the sprocket
- remember that the AFS system only feeds when you start the unit
- if you are using too much line, then try keeping the trimmer running more when you are in between areas
- if you are not getting enough line, then you can turn the trimmer on and off more often

Changing the line spool
The line is easy to change if you are using the pre-wound spools. Just press the release tabs on the line spool cap and remove the cap by pulling is straight off. Clear any broken line or cutting debris from the spool area. Place the spool and line into the spool cap, insert the line end through the hole and press the spool down and rotate it till you feel it drop into the place. Very simple.
Some people like to save money on line and wind it themselves. However, hand wound spools from bulk line do tend to become tangled more frequently than pre-wound spools so the spools that are available from Black and Decker are recommended.

Extension Cord holder
You will need a long extension cord to go with the GH3000. They normally come in 25, 50 and 100 foot lengths. You may even want to consider ordering more than one in different lengths.
There is a handy extension cord retainer included with the GH3000 that will help keep your extension cord from accidentally becoming disconnected. To use it, just feed the extension cord into the cord retainer housing, loop the extension cord around the cord retainer so it rests in the cord retainer. Then plug the extension cord into the power head.

Easy Assembly and Ergonomic Design
The Black and Decker GH3000 comes almost all assembled. All you have to do is place the guard in place by removing the screw from the guard, square up the guard to the trimmer, slide it in place and secure the guard with that same screw.To attach the handle all you have to do is press in on the buttons on both sides of the upper housing, position it and partially push the handle on so that it will hold the buttons in when you release them with your hand. Push the handle on until it “snaps” into place, then adjust it to fit.
The handle has a telescopic mechanism that allows it to be set at a comfortable height. To do this, all you have to do is release the height adjust locking clamp, gently pull on the tube to the desired height and close the locking clamp

Groom N’ Edge
The Groom N’ Edge feature has a quick latch release. This allows you to quickly switch from trimming to edging in just seconds. All you have to do is flip the gray lever, rotate the shaft and then push the gray lever back down. It is that simple.
