Heavy Duty 6.5 AMP Motor
The Black and Decker GH900 with it’s 6.5 amp motor is one of the heavier duty string trimmers available. So what does that mean? What is an amp? Furthermore, how do you know how many amps you need?
An amp is a measurement of electrical current. Amps represent the rate at which electricity flows. So to put this simply, the higher the amp rating, the stronger the motor. As a result, when you have a stronger motor, you can cut bigger weeds.
Electric string trimmers usually vary from around 2 amps to 8 amps. So you can see that the GH900, with it’s 6.5 amp motor, moves it toward the top of the list as far as power goes.
However, there is a drawback to a heavier duty motor. It is going to be a little heavier to carry around. But, it will be far less heavy than carrying around than a gas powered string trimmer.
With the AFS automatic feed system there is no “bumping”

There are some factors that can contribute to how much line you use. One of those factors is – what kind of area are you trimming around? For example, are you trimming close to a brick wall or a sidewalk? If so, your line is going to get chewed up faster because of the hard surface you are trimming against. Even the size of the weeds you are cutting can make a difference in how long the line lasts.
I came across another suggestion. The line advances each time you shut down the trimmer and start it back up. If you are stopping and starting the trimmer a lot you may be advancing more line than necessary. You wouldn’t even realize you were doing this.

How to Change The Line Spool on the Black and Decker GH900

At some point in time you are going to need more line. You certainly don’t want to run out in the middle of trimming your yard and not have more on hand. Be to order some extra replacement line at the same time that you are ordering your GH900. Some people have mentioned that they have had trouble finding the line, but no worries. If you do end up using a lot of line you might want to consider “rolling your own”. This can save you quite a bit of money by buying your line in bulk. Just make sure that the size is 0.065 and that you wrap the spool tightl.

Changing the line spool is really easy.
There are two tabs on either side that you push in and the spool pops off. It takes about as much pressure as opening a can tab. But make sure the string doesn’t unwind while you are inserting it! You do need to make sure it is wound up neatly and tightly. If the line is not wound tight, it will not work.

The trimmer only has a little six inch cord on it. You will need a long extension cord in order to use it. A 100 foot extension cord should be long enough if you have an average size yard.
In the reviews some people have mentioned that they purchased the Amazon basics 100 foot cord and they had a problem with it fitting. Apparently the outlet in the trimmer is inset an inch or so and only has two prongs. This makes it so it is just shy of the room needed to plug in the new extension cord. I can’t say for sure, since I have not personally seen this cord, but I have a similar problem with a leaf blower I own. To solve the problem, I put a 3 prong adapter in the “hole”. This creates an “extension” and you can then easily plug your extension cord into it.
