Electric leaf blowers come in two models, corded and cordless. There are advantages and disadvantages to each.

Corded Electric Leaf Blowers

A corded model means that you are going to need an extension cord for power. This means you will need an electric plug that is accessible to the outdoors. The longest extension cords come in 100 feet. You really shouldn’t connect cords together to go any longer than that. Damage could result to your leaf blower.

Also, if you have a large property the extension cord will only go so far. 

Cordless Leaf Blowers

Cordless leaf blowers require a battery to power them. Just like a corded leaf blower, they are lightweight and quieter than gas models.

If you already own a cordless tool of some kind you will likely want to strongly consider purchasing a cordless leaf blower in that same brand. For example, if you already own a WORX cordless product, you will probably want to buy a WORX cordless leaf blower. Most brands will make their batteries so that they will fit multiple products. Something to point out though is that you need to stay within the same voltage. So, for example, you cannot use a 20 volt battery on a leaf blower that uses a 40 volt battery. 

Advantages of a cordless leaf blower:

• They are lightweight, usually weighing less than ten pounds.
• Quieter than gas leaf blowers
• There is not a need to plug the actual blower in so you can go anywhere with them. 
• Very easy to use. No cords to pull, no gas to mix, just attach the battery and push the button. In the time it would have taken you to either gather an extension cord or mix the gas, you can already be moving leaves. 

Disadvantages of a cordless leaf blower:

• Because of the added weight of a battery, cordless leaf blowers will weigh slightly more than a corded electric leaf blower. However, they are still going to be lighter than a gas model. When shopping for a cordless leaf blower, be sure to check the weight of the blower both with and without the battery in place. 
• Cordless leaf blowers are powered by batteries. Batteries need to be recharged and it will take a while to do that. This puts limitations on the amount of time you can blow leaves. With that in mind, you will probably want to purchase at least one, if not two, extra batteries. 

What to look for when buying a corded leaf blower

The power provided by the electric motor in a corded leaf blower is rated in terms of amps. They range from 7 amp to 12 amp.

The smaller leaf blowers are rated in the 7 amp range. These are great if you have a small yard and not many leaves. They also work great for things like blowing out your garage and cleaning the sidewalks or deck. I have a spot under a table that is sheltered from the rain where I keep one of these small units to blow off my deck. It makes it easy to just pick it up and blows things off in a hurry.

The larger units feature more powerful motors that are rated up to 12 amps. These models can be just as powerful as a gas leaf blower, but at the same time, much lighter.

What to look for when buying a cordless leaf blower

Battery

Batteries for cordless leaf blowers have come a long way in the past five years. Lithium ion technology has dramatically improved the batteries so cordless leaf blowers can really compete.  Li-ion batteries offer many advantages over the old Ni-cad batteries.

• they are as much as 50% lighter.
• Can be recharged more times during the life of the battery
• There is more consistent power even as the battery’s charge wears down.

Today’s  lithium-ion batteries come in voltages between 18v and 120v. 20 volt and 40 volt are the most common. 20 volt batteries are used for the smaller blowers that are commonly used for sweeping driveways, sidewalks, etc.

Keep in mind that cordless leaf blowers will drain a battery more quickly than any other garden tool. That is the reason that, at least at this point in time, you will not find many cordless blower vacuums. 

Because your battery is going to discharge quickly, you are going to want to have at least one spare battery so you can be charging one while you are using the other. 

Things to look for when shopping for a battery-powered leaf blower are:

• the estimated time that the battery will last at full power
• the length of time needed for the battery to recharge

Brushless Motor

The motor is the part of a cordless leaf blower that takes the power from the battery and used it to make the leaf blower run. Traditional motors transmit the charge from the battery through carbon brushes. Some of that charge gets lost due to friction.  That makes this type of transfer inefficient.

Instead, modern brushless motors use magnets to transmit the charge without bringing parts into contact with each other. The result of a brushless motor is that a more consistent power is created that is more similar to a gas leaf blower. 

So the two things you want to look for in a cordless leaf blower is a battery with a higher voltage and one with a brushless motor.

The Black and Decker BV6000 operates on electricity. Yes, you will have to haul an electric cord around with you. However, in my opinion, the benefits  are worth it. No gas to mix and no fumes. Plus the fact that an electric unit is much lighter to carry around than a gas powered one.

There is only a very short cord that is attached to the unit that is just a few inches long. You will need an additional heavy duty outdoor extension cord to attach to the short cord. 

The Black and Decker BV6000 is a 12 amp unit. It is very important to use the proper gauge extension cord. For a cord that is less than 25 feet you will need a 14 gauge cord. If the cord is 25 – 50 feet a 12 gauge cord is needed. 

Mulching

The manufacturer boasts a mulching ration of 16:1. I noticed that most people were mentioning that they felt they were using half to a third of the bags they normally filled. Even if the mulching ratio might not be quite what the manufacturer boasts, reviewers seemed happy with the reduction of leaves they were getting.

The biggest complaint people had when it came to mulching was that the attached bag was too small. It fills up fast and has to be emptied frequently. Many reviewers recommended purchasing the Black and Decker leaf collection system. This will allow you to connect your blower mulcher directly to a trash can. 

As long as the leaves are not too wet, most people agreed that it would vacuum up both wet and dry leaves. The best way to make that work is balance out the number of wet and dry leaves you are vacuuming into the system. This way you are not putting a mass of wet leaves through all at once and causing it to plug. 

Weight

The Black and Decker BV6000 weighs only 8.1 pounds. It comes with a detachable shoulder strap.

While some people who reviewed this product felt it was a bit on the heavy side, they also agreed that once in use it is well balanced and easy to operate.

One of the biggest complaints people had who reviewed this product was the dust that was created while using the Flowtron LE 900. The drier the leaves, the more dust they create. So for that reason I would highly recommend wearing a dust mask.

These particular dust masks are a step above your run of the mill cheap masks. This particular dust mask has an exhale valve that reduces hot air build-up and will keep you cooler. The urea-mesh shell resists collapsing in heat and humidity and the molded nose bridge seals easily without a metal nose band. A naturally contoured face piece with foam nose flange relieves pressure points.

While they are just a tad bit more expensive, my feeling is that it would be worth it to be comfortable.

The spring bucket is also great for collecting grass clippings, weeds, cleaning, clearing and maintaining the landscape in your yard.

The collapsible leaf bag folds down to just 3 inches for easy reusable storage. It’s lightweight design makes it easy to collect, drag and dump debris.

However, don’t be confused! When you look at the “bundle” on Amazon you might think that this collapsible bag is what is supposed to be used with the leaf collection system. This bag is not sturdy enough to be used as the collection bin for the  Worx Leaf Collection System.

This is a fabric bag and it is designed to collapse. Thus, when the weight of the hose and adapter are placed on top of the leaf bag, it will collapse under the weight of the hose and adapter.

I think a lot of people just quickly look at the “bundle” suggestion and think this is what they are supposed to use. You actually need a solid trash can that will hold the weight of the leaf collection system. While the Worx collapsible leaf bag does not work well to put leaves in directly from the leaf collection system, it does work very nicely for what it was designed for.

The Worx WG509 is Ergonomically Designed

The Worx Trivac WG509 electric leaf blower is designed for single handed operation in both blower and vacuum modes.

Unlike most vac/mulchers, the Worx Trivac comes with a unique angled tube that has a curved tip. This tube design makes it easy to vacuum in hard to reach areas such as beneath decks, patio furniture, fence lines, behind central air systems and many other limited clearance area.

At less than 71 decibels, the Worx WG509 is also quiet. It is especially quiet in comparison with gas models.

The Worx Trivac Blower Has Variable Speeds

With the Worx Trivac WG509 you are in total control. It has six speeds with an electronic variable speed throttle control. With the electronic speed control you can slow the blower all the way down to just 75 mph. For example, this low speed works well for blowing on top of mulch. The Worx Trivac leaf blower is one of the only blower/mulcher/vacs on the market that does not require tools or a kit in order to convert it from a blower to a vac/mulcher. Conversion is made easy with just a single lever. Once the lever is engaged, the Trivac’s two-stage mulching system takes over.

The vac/mulcher is a two in one operation. The mulcher needs to be on when the vacuum is on. The first stage is a high-velocity shredder blade that shreds the debris before entering stage two where the debris is pulverized with a metal impeller.

Gone are the days of loading leaves into tons of leaf bags and hauling them to the curb. The Worx Trivac Leaf Blower will speed up the process by chopping leaves into a fine mulch at a yield of 18:1.

So what does that mean? The collection bag holds 1.2 bushels. At an 18:1 ratio this means is that you can put almost 22 bushels of leaves into one collection bag. You can then either spread the mulch under bushes, compost it or haul it out to the curb in one small leaf bag.

Since this Worx turbine blower only has a cord on it that is about a foot long, you will need to also buy an extension cord. The length of cord you need will depend on how large your yard is.

Look for a cord that is rated for outdoor use and make sure the gauge of the cord is appropriate for the length you are using. This is a 12 amp blower so that means that if you are using a 25 foot extension cord you will need an 18 gauge. A 50 foot cord will need a 16 gauge. A 100 foot cord will need a 14 gauge. The longer the extension cord, the higher gauge of cord you need. The smaller the number, the heavier duty the gauge.

Once you have your extension cord hooked onto the blower there is a handy cord retainer that will help keep your cord in place as you go around the yard.
